Breakfast Nook: A work in progress

Good Morning! Today I thought I'd show a little peek of our breakfast nook. Every single thing is vintage and thrifted, but of course!

Gingham curtains: I love gingham and find it to be so charming, especially with ruffles! Not sure they really belong in a spanish style home, but for now I like them!

I am in love with vintage tablecloths and enamelware. I can't get enough of either and they are the two main things I am always on the look out for. The table is old and pretty cheep-o, but until I get my dream formica 40's table, this does the job.

This cake carrier is a recent find. I was soooo excited when I saw it!

Some daisies to match the tablecloth. I love daisies because they are sweet, simple and last a long time!

Today I am going to work on cleaning and organizing my little craft/sewing/laundry room! What are your plans for the day?

A Few Thrifty Finds!

I thought I'd share of few of my recent thrift finds with you today!

This old Cosco chair/step stool was $5.95. I slapped some faux oil cloth on the seat for now and will probably paint it at some point. It has already come in handy when Sophie wants to help make dinner.

I never thought I'd find a Pyrex dot bowl! Finally! And for $2.95, who could pass it up?

I bought this box full of old metal flower frogs yesterday for $4.95. Some have already been put to work and this is the rest of the bunch.

How appropriate! A "Thrift" bank so I can save my pennies for more thrift outings! Too bad I can't figure out how to open it! Still, I love that it is all rusty and worn and it looks cute on my desk.

Thrifty Spring Projects!

Ahhhh, long time no blog! Hopefully I will be making up for that from now on! I wanted to share my recent thrifty projects with you!

This stool was quite hideous when I spied it at the thrift store, but for $5.00 I knew it was worth taking a chance on and could probably be transformed into something a bit nicer! A little bit of paint and some fabric (from a thrifted sheet, of course) and done!

Love those shabby wheels!

Next up I used 2 ladders I found at the Habitat Re-Store for $3.99 each! I love that place! The wood top was behind my washer and dryer when we moved in so I hung on to it, thinking it might find a purpose someday.

I painted everything a lovely pale gray (its almost white but with a touch of gray), rubbed some glazing medium that I mixed with brown on, wiped off and then sealed with a glossy sealer. Screwed it all together and voila!

Added a few accessories and flowers from the yard...
...and now I have the perfect little table for my bay window!

Our house epitomizes "work in progress". We moved in a year ago this month and I have been taking some time letting this 1928 spanish style home "speak to me" so I can figure out which way it wants to be decorated. Not to mention, I am on a tight, tight budget. I will be posting more photos and projects on a regular basis. I've been working on the kitchen and master bedroom so look for those photos next!

Happy New Year! I had been taking a bit of a computer break, enjoying the holidays (and then recovering from the holidays too!)

I picked up a new obsession in my absence: crochet! I have been "hooking" non-stop for a few months now and even designed my own cardigan!

It was super quick and easy (I made mine in 2 days) and I thought I'd share the pattern with you! This super simple cardi is somewhat Anthropologie inspired, I fell in love with all of the ruffle cardigans they had this winter, but I did not fall in love with the prices! So here is my version: enjoy! (Please excuse the crappy photos)

Easy Squeezy Ruffle Cardigan

Size 5.0 hook
Worsted weight yarn: 4(+) skeins
I used Malabrigo Worsted

Finished Size: medium/large (36 bust)

DC: Double Crochet
st(s): stitch, stitches
CH: Chain
SC: Single Crochet
BLO: Back Loop Only

Chain 52
Row 1: Skip 2 ch, DC in 3rd ch and each chain across, CH 3, turn. (50)
Row 2: DC in 1st stitch, *1 DC in next st, 2 DC in next st* repeat from * to end. Always put last DC in ch 3 from previous row CH 3 turn. (75)
Row 3: DC in each St across to end. CH 3, turn (75)
Row 4: DC in 1st st, *1 DC in next 2 sts, 2 DC in next st* repeat * to end (100)
Row 5: DC in each st across, CH 3, turn (100)
Row 6: DC in 1st st, *1DC in next 3 st, 2 DC in next st* repeat * to end (125)
Rows 7-12: DC in each st across, chain 3 turn.

Row 13: DC in 1st 18 sts, skip 28 sts, DC in next st. DC in next 33 sts, skip 28 sts, DC in next st, and in each remaining st across (this creates the arm holes)

Rows 14- desired length: DC in each st across. Finish off once you've reached the length you want.

Attach yarn to arm opening and DC in each stitch around to desired length. (if you want fuller sleeves, like mine, put 2 DC in a few of the stitches). Do not slip stitch, just DC in the round.
To add optional ruffles: *2 DC in 1st st, 3 DC in next st* repeat to end, join with slip stitch the first ruffle stitch. Repeat for other sleeve.

Attach yarn at bottom right side of cardigan opening and SC in back loop only (BLO) evenly up the side, around the collar and down the other side. (I had HDC on mine, but would SC if I had it to do over again) Repeat as desired. Add button holes if desired. To add optional ruffles at neck: beginning where you want the ruffle to start: *2 DC in 1st st, 3 DC in next st* repeat to end.

I also SC in each ruffle st around with a contrasting yarn. I used 2 vintage buttons at the top on mine. I also did one row after the final increase row in BLO just to accentuate the circular look.

That's it! You can make it bigger or smaller just by adjusting the size of the beginning chain, or adding or deleting increases. Just try it on as you go!

I've been a bad blogger of late... the whole family has been sick with a bad cold/flu thing for 2 weeks now. What a bunch of sickos we are! We all had to kinda take it easy and try to get better quickly because we are off to Disney World!

Is anyone starting to think about Christmas already? There is always so much to do that I am trying to get a leg up on it this year. I love making homemade gifts for my family and doing lots of crafty things around the holidays. I pulled out the vintage Christmas tablecloths I have collected since last year to see if I could get any inspiration from them.

It did give me some ideas but I can't post them here since my family does read here from time to time. Wink wink. I do need to get started soon if I am going to pull it off!

But first we have Halloween and Thanksgiving to enjoy! Don't you love this time of year? It's the best! Have a Happy Halloween, everyone!

My First Auction

I went to my first auction Saturday night and let me tell you, it was quite the experience. We had a great time and I was just mesmerized by the whole thing. My friend Karen is an auction guru and has been to hundreds and she was surprised they didn't have more stuff, but this is a new auction house, just starting out. I saw a few things I wouldn't mind owning, so I was very excited!

Everything was going dirt cheap as there were not a lot of people there. I won a couple cool things for 5 dollars each. Unfortunately, I can't post pictures till I get a new camera. Ever since I dropped my Rebel, it is taking crap photos. I am going to start shopping for a nice point and shoot, that thing was too bulky anyways. I had been admiring this long drop- leaf farm table with 6 chairs but I had pretty much decided it was going to be too expensive. When it came up, no one bid on it. The auctioneer said "80 is the lowest I will go, or pass". My arm flew up in the air, all on it's own. I was really excited but nervous about how I would get it home since I live an hour from the auction house. The auctioneer told me I could pick it up Monday morning. Shortly after that I was getting ready to pay for everything and this big lot of silver platters (not real) came up which no one wanted. Then he threw in a zip lock bag of jewelry I had looked at and was interested in. I really didnt know what was inside the bag, but I could see some rhinestone stuff in there, which I am a sucker for. I won the whole lot for $10.00.

Fast forward to Monday morning. I get my husband to drive the little one to preschool so I can drive the hour to pick up my new dining room set. Of course I get there and no one is there. keeping in mind I had to pick up my daughter by 11:30 an hour away, I was a bit nervous. I get the guy on the phone and 5 minutes later he arrives.

We walk in and he tells me he is very, very sorry but the old lady who consigned the table came in yesterday and was so mad that it only sold for 80 dollars as it is worth thousands. She screamed and yelled and DEMANDED the table returned to her. Mind you, she did not have a reserve price on it, but anyways, she threw such a fit he felt he had no choice but to give it back to her. WHAT????!!! I was soooooo mad! First of all, that is ridiculous. Secondly, why didn't he call me? I just drove an hour! Ugh! He refunded my money and offered me $50 off anything if I come back.

But then I got home and a bad first auction experience turned great. Remember that bag of jewelry? I started sorting through it and inside was a vintage ladies Omega Deville watch. I am sure the auctioneer did not know because it's worth 2 grand according to my jeweler.

I think it's a pretty good example of karma.

New Toy!

I was able to finally purchase a serger yesterday and man, oh man, do I love that thing! It makes everything go so much faster and produces much more professional results. I am seriously in love with it!

Our local Green Market opened for the season today. We have been waiting all the long summer for this day. The best organic veggies, flowers, amazing lobster bisque soup and our very favorite cheese vendor are all there in one spot! Not to mention the cider donuts (yum!) In anticipation, I whipped up this market bag last night with the new serger.

It was very comfy to carry around at the market and I fit a ton of stuff in it! I actually had a compliment on it which made me happy!

You can get two out of one pillow case. I just used coordinating sheet scraps I had for the straps and of course I had to add a ruffle. I completed two in a half hour! One is for me and one is for my thrifting buddy, Karen. She is taking me to my first auction tonight and I am very excited!

I will be back to tell you what I scored at the auction (if anything).

What The Heck Is That???

Welcome to this edition of "What The Heck Is That?"! I am your confused host, Amy. Let's begin!

Joking aside...
I decided to be brave and check out the Good Will Outlet this morning. That place is insane, I tell ya! Not for the faint of heart. Anyways, I found this thing....

It was badly tarnished, so I cleaned it up...

...and realized it screws apart. I thought maybe THAT fact would give me a clue, but I still do not know what the heck it is.

It is quite pretty and was only $1.00. It has a little circle on the bottom with a lion in it and I can make out "Silver Plate" but not the rest. It is also stamped 3002. No idea what it could be used for, or if it is purely decorative, or what! Anyone? Will it pay for my kids college educations if I sell it on Ebay???? Or at least a Mocha Latte at McDonalds? Either way, I like it but am stumped, so I come to you amazing blogity bloggers for help! Can you tell me "what the heck is that?" Your prize, should you win: Hmmm... do bragging rights and the satisfaction of helping out a person in need do it for ya? I knew you'd love that!

Thrift Share!

It's been a while since I've done a thrift share, so I thought I'd show you my haul from yesterday!
Vintage sheet, still in the package... destined to become a skirt in the near future.

And another vintage dress for Sophie. She is one well dressed 3 year old! it's funny because my husband had her out at the park yesterday and an older woman kept looking at her and finally said "I can't put my finger on it, but she looks like she is from the 1930's! There is just something so classic about her." I told my hubby it's probably the way I dress her. LOL.
Check out this vintage tablecloth which has clearly never been used! Swoon! It's so perfect I won't be able to use it either! Well, at least not for a while.
These vintage curtains will also become skirts, dresses or some thing along those lines.
My big score of the day, a gorgeous hand made quilt for 12.50. It was marked 24.95 but was 50% off. I can't believe no one else snagged this! I didn't get to the store till almost noon and the place was swamped!

I was very happy with my finds, I spent less than 40.00 and was in and out in under an hour. For me, that is a record. Hope you all had some fabulous finds too! I'm linking up to Apron Thrift Girl, go check out others thrifty finds and add your own!

A Skirt A Day!

I have been having way too much fun making new skirts! I finished this cutie last night. (The skirt, not the kiddo.)

I used a vintage pillow case, vintage mini ric rac, vintage ribbon and buttons along with a vintage hankie for the apron. I love having such a huge stash of vintage goodies to work with, but at this pace I hope I don't run out!

I dropped my camera last week and now it is taking very blurry pics. Oops.

On the bright side, I have enough of all of these supplies and I am working on one just like it for the shop! Right now I am off to the thrift to hopefully find more vintage goodies for more, more, more new skirts!

Pillow Case Shirt

I Know it's getting cooler in most parts of the country, but here in South Florida it is just now becoming tolerable to be outside. We had the hottest summer I can remember, too hot to spend time outdoors really. it is finally starting to cool down to the low 80's! Yay! It feels so nice to walk outside and not become instantly drenched in sweat. Yuck.

Anyways, I dug out a couple of my thrifted Vera pillow cases and made cute tops out of them!

Here's one of them, the other I wore yesterday and is in the wash already. The lady at the post office complimented it and even my sister thought it was store bought!

I loosely followed the instructions in this awesome book! So many ideas for vintage pillowcases! I think my next project will be making a bunch of reusable grocery totes from more vintage pillow cases. I love pillow cases, can you tell?

I heart Holly Hobbie

I have been on a sewing kick again! I lucked out and was able to combine my love for vintage sheets and linens, with my love of sewing and my love of all things Holly Hobbie!

That means I have a new item in my Etsy shoppe!

I have been working out the kinks and perfecting my ruffle skirt. I think I have made about 10 since I first posted about them. I made some changes to how I construct the skirt so that it will last a long long time and always look good. More on that in a different post.

I have a bunch of these fabrics left so that means I am happy to take custom orders!

By the way, that sweet little Holly Hobbie doll... I thrifted her over the summer. She is EXACTLY like the one I had as a little girl. I have never stopped loving all things Holly Hobbie. it just brings back so many memories.

So much, in fact, that when Sophie was one year old, I dressed her as Holly Hobbie for Halloween! This was before my sewing kick, so her costume was ordered from Amazon, not hand made.
Maybe I can convince her to go as Holly Hobbie again next year so I can go crazy making her an awesome costume? This year she insists on being Jessie from the movie Toy Story. Hmmm.... maybe I can go as Holly Hobbie this year! I still have time! LOL!

Thrifty Deconstruction

I guess it's safe to say I've had a bit of a growth spurt this past year....ehem. Maybe I need to stop celebrating each thrifty treasure I find by eating a donut? Perhaps. Regardless, my cargo pants have been getting a little tight so I decided to do a little "upcycling" and repurpose them into cool deconstructed skirts.
I had seen a similar idea in a book called Free Style Sewing. I had only looked at the picture and never read the instructions and returned the book, so I probably didn't do it right but I am happy with how they turned out. I cut the legs off 5 inches or so from the bottom and ripped the seams on the inside of the legs to the zipper. Stitched it back up as a skirt and added the bottom part of the legs on as ruffles in the front. Cute and girly but with an edge.

These were actually capris with ties at the bottom, same steps but just cut the bottoms off above the draw strings and reattached them as ruffles which worked out really well since I used the drawstring to make the ruffle, tied little bows and then attached the whole thing. there are two rows of ruffles, one leg bottom each. Not sure I am explaining it well, but long story short, I finished both in an hour and a half and it was fun too! Since I can wear them up at my waist a bit higher now that the inseam is gone, they fit way more comfy!

Other than doing a little sewing, I've been doing a little thrifting, but nothing too exciting. I did find a stunning vintage Vera nightie and robe set at a consignment shop. I was very excited until I realized that a pretty, dainty and sheer nightie just does not fit into my lifesyle at the moment since I generally have sticky little pancake hands clutching at me every morning. So, I put it up on ebay.

The One Thing I Don't Have

My husband kindly informed me of the one thing I don't seem to have, as I showed him my recent purchases. He called it "restraint".

My defense? Well, you never know when you might need...cough...ehem.... three square dancing outfits.

For $1.95 how could I NOT buy this adorable skirt?

Or this one for only $.95???

I may have to actually start square dancing so that I can wear this...

a steal at $2.95! As I was checking out I had visions of that Brady Bunch episode in my head... the whole family dressed up and square dancing in the living room! Fun! My family would just loooove that, right?? Right? Okay, not so much.

So, at least I have my halloween costume already lined up. I might also just start wearing them out and about and perhaps start a new fashion trend? If that fails, I can always cut them up and repurpose them into something else, like cute little dresses for Sophie! See? Restraint is highly overrated.

Sewing Machine Love!

I had a yard sale yesterday so that I could finally be put out of my misery and purchase a new sewing machine. I got this beauty! It was marked down to $135 and let me tell you, what great bang for the buck! it has so many stitches and has been an absolute dream! I love it!

While playing around with it, I stitched up a couple of dish towels and they are now in my Etsy shoppe!

This first one I ironed on an image I had designed for one of my digital scrapbook kits.

By the way, if you are interested in Digital Scrapbooking, my designs are sold with Memory Mixer software (which is soooo easy to use) and also available for download on their website. You can learn all about it here.

Then I added some vintage fabric and trim.

This one I LOVE! I made a tiny apron from vintage fabric, and machine embroidered it, added a little pocket...
...stitched it on to the towel, did some decorative stitching on the edges and added some vintage ric-rac and appliques! So fun to make! I have some refining to do, so as I make more, they will get better. For each one I made I realized several things I should do different on future towels.

I feel a little weird about trying to sell something I made because it's not PERFECT, ya know? But we'll see. Still, it has been so much fun to play with my new toy!

Vintage Pillow Case Ruffle Skirt Tutorial

I thought I would share with you one of my favorite skirts to make for a little girl. It is super easy, if I can do it, anyone can. It is made from thrifted vintage pillow cases.

As much as I love to sew, I am self taught and to be honest, quite lazy. I want instant gratification. I am sure that if any real seamstresses out there read this tutorial it will make them cringe! LOL!

Here we go! My daughter is about a 2T - 3T, but I also made one for my step daughter who is 8 and wears a size 8. Same instructions, just adjust the measurements.

I started by cutting off the bottom half of a pillow case. The bottom finished end becomes the hem of the skirt. For my older daughter I cut it up higher, for the little one, this will do.
I then cut a few strips from pillow cases the long way. Basically, the strips for the ruffles should be at least twice or more long as the skirt's circumference.

Fold over the edge of the strips double, and press. If I were making this as a gift I would do the same on both sides of the strips, but knowing my kid will most likely spill grape juice or something equally staining on hers in short order, I don't bother.
Also press your seam for the elastic. Make sure you measure the width of the elastic! Haha, Lesson learned.
Sew the seam for the elastic, leaving an opening.
Measure the child's waist and cut the elastic 1/2 an inch longer or so. I stick a safety pin on one end of the elastic and feed it through.
Sew the elastic, really, really well.
Then close up the opening and voila! The skirt part is done! Kinda cute like this, but let's keep going!
OK I forgot to take a photo, but go ahead and sew up the strips. Yawn, borning, I just zone out during that part.

Here comes the really fun part! Elastic thread! Hand wind your bobbin with elastic thread. Don't pull on it, just wind it with no tension. I have seen tutorials on how to hand wind the elastic thread onto a bobbin, but it's pretty self explanatory.
Pop the bobbin in and start sewing down the full length of each strip. Most people use the technique for shirring. I'm lazy and use it to make ruffles.
If your strip is long enough, and you want it extra ruffle-y, you could do two rows. I just did one and this is what I ended up with.
Do that for each strip and then pin the bottom ruffle onto the skirt.
Now just simply stitch in the ditch, couldn't be easier. Do make sure to pull the bottom skirt layer tight as you sew the ruffle on.
Leave a little on each end and then flip the ruffle up.
Put the right sides together and stitch.
Rinse and repeat for each ruffle, working your way up.
That's it!
I decided to make my top ruffle from some eyelet trim, just to give it a finished edge, but on others I have not. You could do some ricrac or trim or leave it!
Vintage pillow cases aren't the only things you can use! Look around and see what else you could recycle! On one skirt I ripped the ruffle off a curtain I had shoved in a cupboard.

Of course, a matching skirt for mom would be so cute made from vintage sheets!
All that's left to do is watch a sweet little princess enjoy wearing it!

What A Week!

It's been a crazy week here! On Wednesday not only did I turn another year older, I also took my oldest daughter, to college. Waaaaaaah on both accounts! Florida State University is about 7 hours from here so that part really stinks. I miss her so much, more than I thought I would. I've been nervous for her, excited for her and every emotion in between.

Before we left, she presented me with these...

Three milk bottles from our home town of Hamburg NY. The 2 in the back are clearly from Hamburg Dairy, and the one in the front is from Quimby, also of Hamburg. I thought that was such a sweet gift and shows my kid really knows me and the kind of things I like.

Oh, and look what vintage goody my Mom gave me!

That lovely set in the top right corner. It is Pottery Guild and so cute! (you can also see a little Stangl teapot sticking out on the left, I scored that for 2.95 because the lid is missing.

I did manage to thrift a bit. Actually, my Mom and I stopped in Ocala on our way home to hit up 2 thrift stores.

This cute little tin was 88 cents

and full of this sweet note paper.

Great Hall Pottery tea pot, I paid 7.50 because there was a chip on the spout that was glued back on. You can hardly tell and I love the shape. I don't mind these little flaws, especially when it makes something so affordable. Afterall, goodness knows I am full of flaws myself! LOL

This was a strange impulse purchase. A bag of billard balls for 2.00. Not sure what I can repurpose the rest into, but for now I have these four on the side of my mantle, displaying my house number.

And a pint sized apron for my pint sized helper, Sophie. One great thing about having two kids so far apart in age is that I now see how fast Emma grew up and now she is off on her own... woosh... it flew by! It makes me appreciate every moment with Sophie that much more. I try to take mental snapshots of every little thing so that I can really treasure each and every minute.

Speaking of Sophie, I have been making some cute little ruffle skirts out of vintage pillow cases for her and will post a tutorial here in the next couple days.

Busy Busy (but still finds time to thrift)

My oldest daughter Emma is leaving for college next week (Go 'Noles!) so we've been busy shopping for her dorm stuff and getting everything ready. Of course she wanted all NEW stuff, not used so we had to make a trip to Ikea. We also found some cute things at TJMaxx and I have to admit that outside of grocery shopping, I had not set foot in a new retail store in months! It felt kind of strange. Anyhoo, she picked out some way cute items and everything is color cordinated, from storage lockers to bedding, towels and dishes, lamp, everything matches. Very cute.

I must admit this is a hard time for me. It really feels like just yesterday I was taking her to her first day of Kindergarden. I cried like a baby. It goes by way too fast. Now I have one daughter in college and one at home I am trying to potty train. I find myself not nearly as strict or by the book with the little one as I was with Emma. Now that I know our time with them at home is so fleeting. Play in mud puddles? No problem! Wear your princess costume everywhere for a week straight? Sure! Cookies for breakfast? Why not? Well, maybe not cookies for breakfast, but you get the idea. It will be interesting to see how this new approach I am taking to child rearing comes back to bite me in the butt when Sophie gets older. Haha.

Anyways, I did manage to sneek into a couple thrifts this week.

This cool wire basket, I have been wanting one for a long time. I put my alabaster fruit collection in it (also thrifted, of course!) The basket was 1.91 the fruit was 7.95.

This awesome bed tray was 2.92 (where do they come up with these prices??)

I googled Stober trays and they were made in the 20's and 30's. Love that label!

I found some old wrapping paper and cards. I always love the graphics. I found some other stuff too, but havent had time to photograph because I have been busy sewing...

... new living room window treatments. From thrifted fabric of course. A whole bag of both fabrics, high end designer stuff, for 5.95. And plenty to sew all my window valences and a couple pillows and still have some left over! Best part is, it has the same colors as my dining room, so it all flows very nicely. Once I finish I will post pics.

Yesterday morning I was getting my thrift on and doing pretty well, actually. I saw a sign for a yard sale on my way to Good Will and I almost didn't stop, but thank goodness I did! I was shopping the little sale, mostly kid stuff and chatting with the lady and her daughter about American Girl dolls, which the daughter is trying to earn money to buy another one. So of course I had to buy something from her, she was so cute. I was loading my purchase, a sprinkler thing you hook up to the garden hose for the kids to run in, and this woman across the street came out and said, "can I put a couple chairs in your yard sale?" The nice lady having the sale said yes, so the other woman comes out with these two chairs, like the one above, but rusty and globbed with paint. I asked how much she wanted... $5.00 bucks each. SOLD! I snatched them up since I knew they were Russell Woodard Sculptura chairs. I got them home, realized as much as I love them, they needed a lot of work. Well, about 2 minutes from my house is a big mid century modern antique store, so I brought the chairs there. I found the owner working in his shop, fixing up some funiture, which apparently he loves to do. I sold him the chairs for $100.00. Whooooohooooo!

Now, I know I could have gotten more for them if I sold them on ebay, but then I would have to deal with shipping, etc. I could have invested to have them refinished and then sold them for more, but it would be expensive. I think of it this way, the longer you spend on an item for resale, the more you cut into the profit. Afterall, time is money, right? I am very much ok with the $100 dollar sale. I only owned the chairs for about 15 minutes, so I wasn't attached to them yet!

Making a 900% profit in 15 minutes feels sooooo good! I think I am addicted! American Pickers, watch out, there is a new picker in town! Haha, but honesty, here is why I won't make a great picker: I only buy what I love and once I buy it I want to keep it. Hmmmm, that could be a problem.

So now you have seen my Pyrex collection... well some of it. When I first started collecting, I was drawn to everything Pyrex because I had my Grandma's original 4 piece mixing bowl set in primary colors. I have so many great memories of baking with her, using those bowls. I still use them to this day...(will post pics of the rest of the collection another time).

When I started collecting I was buying up everything pyrex. But then space became an issue and I realized I needed to focus my collection. I chose to stick with Butterfly Gold because my other grandma had this pattern when I was little. Actually my ex-mother-in-law did too. Evn though she is my exMIL, I still have fond memories of sitting at her kitchen table drinking coffee. So, that's how I landed on Butterfly Gold. I sold the rest in a yard sale. The only other pyrex I buy now is solid color to go with Grandma's original set of four. Sometimes it is hard for me to resist a pretty pyrex dish that is in a different pattern, but I remind myself that I have no room for more AND I don't cook nearly enough to justify having 10 cassarole dishes. LOL!

This pretty plate, made in Japan, still has the sticker on the back. Not sure what I will do with it, but it was pretty and I wanted it.

In Need of Super Sleuthes and More Thrift Finds

Well, I did a little thrifting last week. No way, right? LOL! Here's what I found

These paint by numbers were .50 cents each. Perfect and quirky for the empty space above the sofa.

This cabinet was exactly what I needed for the downstairs bathroom. It was $12.95 and I love it! I may paint it at some point, but for now it's fine.

This clock is not vintage but a retro inspired goody with a built in timer. I was so excited it was only $1.95. Score!

Okay, and here is where I am kicking myself. I had seen an adorable cookie jar that matched this pitcher, but it was $14.95 and I didn't have enough cash on me. Darn thrift only takes cash. I could have gone to their ATM but I was frazzled so I thought I would just come back for it. Well, of course, you know what they say, you snooze, you lose. Went back today and it was gone.

BUT, I did find this at a different and unrelated thrift store.. isn't that weird? Anyhoo, it was $1.91 so of course I snagged it. I want to find matching pieces because I absolutely love this sweet little pattern, but alas, it is unmarked.Anyone know anything about it? I have searched it every single way I can think and cannot find anything close. So frustrating! Any help sure would be appreciated. I don't think I have all that many blog readers, but it is worth a shot!

Thrifty Strawberry Finds and More!

I didn't hit any yard sales this past week, but I did manage to sneek in a couple trips to the thrift.

I was lucky to find these jars to add to my strawberry/fruit motif in the kitchen. I have already put one to work in trying to grow my own avacado tree. Haha, we'll see.

I was soooo excited to find 6 vintage strawberry glasses for a total of 4.95! Yay! I love them!

This cute little vintage tin was in a bag of vintage buttons and notions I found.

Even though I said I was not going to buy and more milk glass, I couldn't pass this one up for 4.95. Can you believe it? So pretty and ruffle-y. Fenton is one of my favorite makers so I am super excited about adding this one to the collection.

I keep intending to update my blog each Monday so that I can join all the fabulous blog parties out there, but I get easily distracted...

...making pillows out of vintage towels and tablecloths...

... lot's of 'em!

Anyhoo, I, of course have been thrifting as usual. Dear Hubby has asked me to pace myself a little more. Who me?? Hahaha.

I found this cute wall shelf at my favorite/crazy making thrift store... (more on that in a bit). The shelf was blue and I painted it white so it would match my kitchen cupboards. Of course everything on the shelves is thrifted too.

Here is a little view of my quirky but fun breakfest nook window. I have actually removed the trivets because it was overkill, but I love the apron valance! Just makes me smile.

Did you see these cute plastic plates scattered throughout this post? I love, love them! They are not marked on the back so I know nothing about how old they are or who made them. I would love to find out so I can start searching for more! I adore melamine, especially for a family as clumsy as mine.

So, about my love/hate relationship with a certain thirft store in my area... OMG. this place is totally insane, huge, and I have found the most wonderful things there. I would say about 80% of my goodies have come from this place. The downside is that once a few things are snatched up at 2.95, they start pricing it at 7.95. Boo, but it is for charity, so what the hey. The craziness comes in with the other shoppers. This place is MOBBED! I have arrived there at a couple minutes before 9 and there is a line to get in. Every time!

Once in, it's every man for himself, there is so much rudeness and pushiness, you would be shocked. People purposely block the isles so you can't get through, they crowd you, they elbow you.

The "professional" pickers are the worst. Many ebayers and flea market sellers and they are incredibly pushy. I have actually had an item taken out of MY OWN cart by one! Unreal! They stand around the employee door and then crowd all over the poor lady wheeling the stuff out, grabbing things off her cart, not bothering to look where they are going. I get frustrated because here I am trying to buy stuff for my own home, I don't want to have to buy it from these jerks for triple the cost on ebay. To sum up the shopping experience there, basically it is like warfare. Still, I keep going back because, well, that place has got the goods and I guess I want them bad enough! I just need to shed my sweet little "excuse me, please" polite attitude at the door and go in and get down and dirty!

A day (or two) late and a dollar short

I seem to be spinning my wheels this week and not getting anything done, so I thought I'd show you a couple of thrifty finds from weeks ago that make me smile.
I had this house when I was a little girl. Now my daughter has one too! I swear, I did buy it for her and not just to indulge my own nostalgia. Wink, wink.

I found a whole bag of these little guys and gals at the thrift for 1.95. I had to ask my FB friends what they were. I knew they weren't Little People. My pals came to the rescue right away, they are Toddle Tots! So cute! My daughter is currently OBSESSED with all the Toy Story movies right now and these little buggers have a little cameo in the first and second movie, so it's a double score!

Last week my Mom came over for a little tea party and brought these yummy strawberry miffins on this beautiful Limoge server. She gave me the server... and the creamer and sugar. My Mom is the BEST!!!!

Thrifty Projects!

Did ya'll have a nice weekend? I was super busy thrifting and fixing and painting. Here are my finds!

This spice set with rack was $5.99 at GoodWill. Score! I had been checking them out on ebay and really wanted some, so I was thrilled! The rack was brown wood though and the labels on the jars were foil with eagles on them.

Did not quite fit the look I am going for. So I spray painted the rack and soaked the labels off the jars and replaced them with some vintage decals I had won on ebay a while back.

Much better now! Cute and a little whimsical... just what I wanted! Of course, typical me did not take before photos.

Okay, thought I'd throw this in... Last week my sister was over and we were making cupcakes. We had some left over pureed strawberries that I didn't want to go to waste. My sis suggested whipping them up with butter to make strawberry flavored butter. I added a bit of sugar too and it is actually very yummy on toast and english muffins!

I found this quilt rack on Friday for $6.00. It was black so I spray painted it white.

This was a doll crib, it was just brown wood, so again, got out the spray paint, some cute rub on's, made a little mattress from a pillow case, and now it's pretty cute!

The monster and bear seem to like it too. Sophie loves putting her "babies" to sleep in it.

Speaking of Sophie's sleeping arrangements. I have been searching high and low for an iron twin bed for her. She is really out growing her toddler bed. Anyhoo, I found one on Sat! 25 bucks, what a deal! Now we just need the mattress, boxspring and frame. LOL.

I did find these cute curtains at the thrift for her window, now I can't wait to get her big girl bed in there and really go nuts with all the vintage bedding and quilts and stuff I have been hoarding...cough, cough... erm.... collecting, I mean.

Tole Trays and More Thrifty Goodness!

I had a lot of fun thirfting and yard saling this weekend! Here are just a few of the things I picked up.
I needed a magazine rack for my bedroom. It was that dirty cream-ish color so i spray painted it white. $3.

Two hand embroidered pretties for my bedroom. $2.50 for both.

Love, Love this vintage red vinyl sparkly chair! It will be right at home in my sewing room and much more comfy than the one I was using. I was thrilled when I asked the price and she said five dollars. Score!

These white enamal bowls were $5 for the set and the enamal cup was 49 cents at Good Will.

This rack was $1.00 and the jars were $1 each or 50 cents, depending on the size. The busicut cutters came with that top jar.

This sweet older lady was having a yard sale and I am so glad I stopped by. She sold me the two long tole trays and the small bird tole tray for $1 each. I added them to the ones I already had from the thrift and made a wall display in my kitchen.

So sweet.

Love them! I found other things too, which I listed on ebay. Like this. And this. And this beauty. We'll see how it goes!

A Few Things That Make Me Happy

Since the direction of my blog is changing as I embark on a journey to decorate this old house (on a very tight budget!) , I thought I would share with you some of my favorite finds.

This sweet little painting was 49 cents at Goodwill. When I find pretty little handmade items I feel I must rescue them. The purses were 2.50 each.

I found this pretty Stiffel lamp at Good Will for 7.99. The Fenton Bowl was 5.95 and the little basket was 4.95. Perfect for my blue and white bedroom.

My kitchen farm sink. I love it so much! I almost don't even mind washing dishes now!

This fun teapot. 2.95 at my favorite thrift store.

Pyrex Bowls. I have my Grandma's original set of 4 and others I have added. I use them every day.

This needle point calendar was only 3.99 at Good Will. So much work went into it, and it is so pretty, I had to rescue it too. It hangs in my kitchen now.

Milk Glass collection. It got a little out of control so now I don't even buy it when I see it, unless it's blue! (This is only a corner of it. The top of this hutch is full of it!

I love, love, love nesting dolls!

Alot. Most are on the book shelf in my daughter's room, but these are the ones I kept for my office.

I'm alive!

Well, well, long time no talk! Sorry to have been MIA for so long. Let me just say: when it rains, it pours. Things are finally calming down now, so I will give you a quick recap of the past couple months.
Emma graduated from high school. She is leaving for Buffalo for 6 weeks and then off to Florida State. We moved, AGAIN. We finally sold our house. And I had a killer allergic reaction to some medication. All that has kept me from blogging.

Well, all that, and trying to set up our new home. It was built in 1926 and is all updated but with many of the original charming details intact. Pesky cypress ceilings, wood floors, spanish tiles, farm sink... I love, love, love it!

I have been thrifting my head off, one of my favorite things! All in search of the best little treasures to decorate our home. More on some of what I have accomplished (and have yet to accomplish) in a future post. Also, best part is, I now have a sewing room! Since I have been collecting vintage linens for some time, I have decided to make stuff out of them!

This is just a small sampling of them. I can't seem to pass them up! They are so soft with age and so pretty.

Anyhoo, my Mom (and thrifty partner in crime) had given me this huge bolt of white fabric so I used some of that and a couple of strips of some vintage sheets and made this:

It turned out so cute, I am going to make more: some for Sophie, and some with pink sheets, blue sheets, etc! Fun!

Speaking of Sophie, we like to be "match-y match-y twins" some times. I had found this vintage dress for 2 bucks, cut it up and made these skirts:

OK, so she is wearing hers sideways in the pic, but you get the idea! I loved the fabric print so it was quite the thrifty score for me. But my best thrifty score EVER was today:

ONE dollar. I am not kidding. Hand made, old as can be, embroidered and gored! OMG, I almost fainted. I love it! I also found this nifty scale for 5 bucks:

It was covered in grime but cleaned up nicely and is perfect for my kitchen! As soon as I get the rest of the house done I will take pics and share them here. My only rule for decorating this place is, it has to be old, it has to be cheap and it has to be functional (or too cute to pass up!)

... I'm done. LOL, designing, that is.

It breaks my heart to leave TLP, which in my personal opinion, is the best store ever!! But, my heart is just not in designing anymore. I miss scrapping, I find myself not wanting to spend time on the computer, my interests are changing too. I am getting involved in volunteering for the police department, I have been sewing, playing lot's of Wii, and spending time outside with Sophie at the park. Designing is just not a passion of mine anymore, and there are not enough hours in the day, as we all know.

Therefore, my store will close Sunday night. In the meantime, everything is 50% off, so feel free to snag stuff before it goes away for good!

Hi everyone! Sorry for being such a bad blogger of late. I think I was in a designing frenzy while guesting at SO and I burnt myself out! LOL! I do plan to bring those SO kits over to TLP, one by one.

Other than that, my hubby and I took a little cruise to the Bahama's, which was awesome, and exactly what we both needed! Emma and I have been taking the Citizens Police Academy, which has been just so interesting. After getting robbed, it is just what we need to educate ourselves and take steps to make ourselves and our stuff secure. It's been really great! After the class is over, I plan to volunteer at the police department.

We've been potty training Sophie, and it was going great until this week. Hopefully I can get her back on track. I am searching for preschools for her now for next year. OMG, they are expensive! One is 15,000 a year and another is 560 a month, and this is for part time! Eek!

We're looking forward to our Disney trip later this month. We've been making reservations for character breakfasts, dinners, etc. I am ordering up some costumes and p.j.'s to suprise the little ones with.

More Scrapping & Sneak Peeks

Hi everyone! Hope you are all having a nice week! I know many of you are getting snowed in, yuck. Wish you could be here in Florida with me! My oldest daughter is suppose to fly to Buffalo in the morning, so we are praying that everything will be clear by then!

Anyhoo... on to the scrappy stuff. I have two new kits coming out on Friday and I thought that rather than make some cute little sneak peek with them, I would scrap with them and show you my pages!

First, for TLP: A Little Bit Softer Now. I named it as such because I have been doing so many loud, bright, doodly kits lately (in my attempt to ward off the winter blues I think) and I was in a mood to make something pretty and soft. I love how it turned out! The top page was made using a new template by Amy Martin, coming to TLP on Friday! I am addicted to her templates! I will post the link and info on Friday!

Don't you love an occasional lazy scrapping day? My husband was nice enough to take over kiddo duty today and let mommy have a break!

Since I don't get as much time to scrap as I used to, I now subscribe to quick and simple method. A paper or 2, a couple elements and a photo that means a lot to me.

Here are a couple pages using the lovely February BYOC stuff from TLP and a couple Amy Martin templates that are going to be released on Tuesday at TLP. I love her style and the templates help me do things I wouldn't normally attempt, like small photos and off set placement.

The next page is more my typical style, using my Peaches For Me kit available at Scrap Orchard: A big photo, front and center. I tend to go back to this again and again. I think it's because of my advertising/newsletter design background. Plus, my natural tendency is to make it all about the photo.

Hi everyone! I thought I should pop in and say hello, since it's been so long! My "real life" stuff has been forcing me to put my "digi stuff" on the back burner this past month or two. It's been craaaaaaazy around here. I am hoping things calm down soon, so I can get back to doing what I love!

Just an update for those who are wondering: no, they did not catch whoever broke into our house yet and our stuff has not been recovered. I am finding myself waking up almost every hour at night, I guess because of what happened. Thank goodness they just grabbed stuff and left and we are safe. There have been other crimes lately, and robberies too, in our area. I am just on high alert now to everything and trying to be smart and safe but not paranoid, if that makes sense.

In the meantime, I am getting ready to host Thanksgiving for my family. One thing I am thankful for this Thanksgiving season is that my Mom is coming over to cook the turkey. Haha! But seriously, so much to be thankful for: my kids, my husband, my family, my friends, our health, and so much more.

I want to wish each of you a very happy Thanksgiving if you are here in the US, and for my international friends, I simply wish you a very happy week!

I *plan* to have a new collab to share with you soon, and December BYOC is fast approaching and I will have something new for that too!

I do have a little turkey day freebie for you, but I am going to post it on Thursday! Mwahahahaha!

Long time no blog and Welcome to the Neighborhood!

Sorry it's been a while. We have been busy trying to settle into our new home. If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know how excited I was about our move. It all went pretty well and we got everything unpacked a settled in 3 days! I am a maniac about getting that stuff done.

Anyways, we moved on the 15th and then on the night of the 19th our new house was broken into while we slept. My husbands laptop and wallet were stolen, my cell phone and the diaper bag. Needless to say, that put a damper on my enthusiam for the new place. So, since then we have been busy installing additional locks, motion lights and getting quotes for security systems.

Clearly I have been a bit on edge about the whole thing because yesterday morning I saw some guy jogging from my backyard out the drive way. I went outside to see who it was and saw him walking down the street. It freaked me out so I called the police. Turns out it was the Florida Power and Light guy reading our meter. =0P How embarrassing.

So that's why I haven't been around much, but I have been getting some new things done "behind the scenes" which will be for the November BYOC at TLP! Till then, stay safe and happy scrapping!

SYTYCD has come to a close and the winner is.... Maelia Designs! Honestly, her kits were incredible and I expected her to win! Congrats to her and JadyDay who actually only trailed by 16 votes!!! Her kits were so awesome and I think that is close enough to almost call it a tie! In my opinion at least! LOL!

As far as my SYTYCD kits go, if you missed them at DSA, I will be adding a few of them here and a couple others I may expand on and add to my shop. I really liked my 365 kit so that is one I want to make bigger and better now that I am not crunched for time!

I almost forgot! I have this freebie for you! In my favorite things kit at DSA I made the alpha look as if a 9 year old made it (on purpose! LOL!) because I was trying to make the whole thing look like it was from my perspective as a 9 year old in 1981. However, I thought at the time that not everyone is going to want a messy, smudgy marker alpha, so I went ahead and made a nice clean one in Illustrator too. Here 'tis, along with a couple other items I had not included in my final kit. Enjoy!

Well, here it is! I still can't believe I made it to the final week of this contest! It has been such a whirlwind, I can't even explain. Deciding to go CU Free at the beginning of the whole thing, when I had only 5 days to crank out each kit, and then sticking with it throughout has been such a challenge. It meant that not only could I not use commercial use elements, clipart, or images, but I also would not allow myself to use CU textures, styles, nothin', nada. But, I did it and I am so proud! I am soooo worn out now, LOL! I need a vacation after this is all over!

SYTYCD Week 2 Freeeebie!

Well, my week 2 submission is up! The challenge was to make a Project 365 /everyday type kit.

I decided to further challenge myself and go 100% CU Free. I read *somewhere* (LOL) that some people were looking for CU Free kits to scrap with. It really got me thinking again about the fact that I used to not use CU when I started out, but then all these wonderful CU products started hitting the market and, well, honestly I got lazy.

Let me just say this: there is NOTHING wrong with using CU creatively. But, for ME, this is the right way to go. I feel a bigger sense of pride in my kits that don't include CU, everything in my kits will be totally unique to me only, and I do happen to like to sew and doodle and make textures anyways, so I might as well! I've also become more comfortable with extracting, but it's stil not my favorite way to spend an evening. LOL! However, this is the direction I plan to go with my kits from now on. I am not knocking those who use CU in ANY way, all I'm saying is this is what is right for ME.

PS: I hope PS filters aren't considered CU... LOL! I LOOOOVE my Alien Skin filters!

I wanted to take a moment to touch base with those of you who are using the program, or who have children using the program. I would like to know:

1. Are the videos helpful to you/your kids?

2. Are you even watching the videos? (LOL)

3. What would you like the next video to cover?

4. Would the videos be more helpful if they were shot in PSE?

I keep sitting down to record a new video, but honestly, no one has been asking for a new one (LOL) and I am not sure if maybe every basic skill needed was covered in the first 4 videos, or they are just not that important of a component for the system, or what!

Your feedback is very important to me and I would love to hear what you think!

I am here to assist your child in learning to digiscrap, expand their creativity and imagination and most importantly, have fun! I just want to be sure I am meeting those goals and I want to provide you with anything that would further allow us to achieve those goals! Here is a fun little printable/hybrid goodie for you! This is a mini file folder made using the Fun Wow kit (That you can download for free, 2 posts below)! Use it to keep your receipts or coupons organized in your purse or for whatever! I printed mine on card stock and any heavier weight paper would work.
By the way, there is a template and psd files similar to this in my May Grab Bag, but to use on your layouts! It is such a fun item to get that paper scrapped look, while doing it all digi, baby!

Rise and Shine Scrappers! The big day is here! Weeeeeeee! I have been looking forward to this for so long now! I know you have lots of crops, chats and shopping to do, so I will try to keep this short.
